FAQ

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a unique method of exercise created by Joseph Pilates that by design simultaneously strengthens, lengthens and balances the body. These exercises are done in a specific order and require muscular control from the powerhouse of the body along with mental focus and attentive breathing.

What is the Powerhouse?

The powerhouse is a term used to landmark the body’s center/core. These are the muscles of the front, side and rear of the body and include the abdominals, back, hips, glutes and upper thighs.

How often should I do Pilates?

2-3 times a week is ideal. However if you can only get in once a week be as consistent as possible to maximize your results. You could also reinforce your practice by doing mat work at home - I’m more than happy to provide you with a routine specific for your needs upon request.

What are the benefits of regular sessions?
  • leaner & stronger muscle tone

  • improve your core strength by working the deep stomach and back muscles

  • improve your appearance with better posture and a balanced body shape

  • relax your body and mind

  • improve concentration and co-ordination

  • prevent injury and future postural problems

Do I have to be “in shape” before beginning Pilates?

No! Wherever you are is where you start. Although, if you have a known illness or injury I would ask that you receive permission from your doctor or physical therapist before we begin. I would be happy to speak with them to explain what we do so that she/he and I could customize an appropriate workout for you.

When will I see results?

Everyone responds differently but clients consistently tell me that they feel “great!” after our first session. As for physically seeing the difference, it depends on your dedication, but 2-3 times a week will take approximately 10 sessions.

Is there a difference between Pilates for men and women?

Joseph Pilates intended the Method for men only, but it really depends on the individual, not gender. And given the endless number of exercises from which to choose, there’s always an option whether it be a modification or simply sticking to the fundamentals.

Can children do Pilates?

Teenagers may practice mat work. Pre-teens, however, are still developing their skeletal and muscular systems so resistance training must be done in moderation.

Can I start Pilates while I’m pregnant and what are the benefits of Pilates post pregnancy?

If you were not a regular practioner of Pilates before becoming pregnant I suggest that you wait until after you’ve had your baby. There is an intense amount of focus on the abdominals and pelvic floor muscles in Pilates so once you’ve been given the approval by your doctor to do exercise, this is an excellent activity to incorporate into your workout regimen.
